Does the Kedge Anchor Point comply with EN 795: 2012?

Contrary to its predecessor EN 795:1996, EN 795:2012 no longer relates to anchor points that can be permanently installed in the structure. This standard is no longer applicable to almost all anchor points that are used on flat roofs, so including the Kedge Anchor Point.

How can I achieve good safety protection on the roof?

It starts with safe roof access procedures, the instruction of anchor point users and training in the use of personal protective equipment for fall protection. However, supervision of the correct use of the protective equipment provided, the availability of rescue equipment and the implementation of a rescue plan are also part of safety at work.

How is an assessment performed of whether an existing top layer is still suitable for use of the Kedge Anchor Point?

It is recommended to renovate the roof first if any of the following are present:

severe cracking
severe wrinkling and blistering
loose overlaps
severe crazing
severe mud curling and pimpling

The Kedge Anchor Point can be installed afterwards.

Is an anchor point that can be permanently installed in the structure (like Kedge) subject to a European Regulation?

Yes, permanent anchor devices (like Kedge) fall under the European Construction Products Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 305/2011). Having a CE marking under this Regulation is possible, among other things, if a harmonised standard applies under this Regulation. However, there is currently no harmonised standard for permanent anchor devices. Another route is also possible by applying for a European Technical Approval (ETA) at a Technical Assessment Body (TAB). A technical assessment requires a European Assessment Document (EAD), which states how a manufacturer can test and assess a product (or request a third party to do so). The TABs draw up these assessment documents. Kedge Safety Systems has followed this route.

On which roofing material can the Kedge Anchor Point Bitumen be used?

The Kedge Anchor Point Bitumen is only allowed on so-called ‘modern’ multilayer bitumen roofing materials. These are roofing materials made of APP- or SBS-modiﬁed bitumen with at least one polyester inlay. The roof may be insulated or uninsulated. The Kedge may be installed on mechanically fastened, loose-laid ballasted or partially bonded multilayer bitumen roofing systems. An old mechanically fastened roof with an overlay consisting of a layer of partially bonded roofing material is considered a multilayer system.

On which roofs can the Kedge Anchor Point be used?

On flat roofs with an angle of inclination of up to 15 degrees. The material of the load-bearing structure hardly plays any role. It can be made of wood, steel, concrete or other stony materials.

What about ageing of the Kedge Anchor Point?

The Kedge Anchor Point Bitumen has been extensively tested for ageing by KIWA BDA Testing under supervision by the reputable certification body of the Belgian Construction Certification Association (BCCA) by artificially ageing the installed anchor points. The test results show that ageing has little to no effect on the quality of the connection between the Kedge Anchor Point and the bitumen roofing material.

What are the benefits of an Kedge Anchor Point?

For many reasons, like their easy installation without making too much noise, e.g. due to drilling work. Because no attachment goes through the roofing system or the roof construction, there is no risk of leaks. It also means that no dirt can get into the interior of the building. The installation height is low and not visually unappealing.
